North East England Cottages
The main counties of North East England are Northumberland,
Durham, Tyne and Wear and Yorkshire. Some of these counties once formed the great Saxon kingdom of Northumbria and their history is as eventful as any other region of the United Kingdom. For details about North East accommodation see below.
Despite the North East's industrial heritage, large tracts remain unspoilt. Northumberland National Park is one of the least populated areas in the UK. It is a profoundly beautiful region and covers more than 1000 square km. The Cheviot Hills which run through Northumberland National Park eventually merge with the Pennines and provide some magnificent views of Scotland
The Pennines are best experienced on foot and, in places, consists of vast moorland expanses of grass and heather. The Pennine Way National Trail is also popular amongst walkers and runs for over 250 miles, cutting through some breathtaking countryside. Other pasttimes in the area include cycling and hiking.
World Heritage sites,
